In Black and White- Say We Are Not Brothers CDEP

This is a very hard review for me to write for the sole fact that “In Black and White” plays a style of emo/post hardcore reminiscent of bands, like Cap’n Jazz or Hoover, that were around in the early to mid 90’s. Back in those days I was listening to Mudhoney, Screeching Weasel, Assuck, and Gorrila Biscuits, which admittedly are pretty varied bands, but I never really ventured into the realm of say the bands on Cranky. That isn’t to say that the music on this slab of plastic isn’t good, because it is.

I can say that there definitely are things that make “In Black and White” very impressive to me. For one, they are super tight for a young band, which from personal experience is a hard thing to be. I happened to take a peek at their webpage (I know, I cheated) and it seems like they’ve been playing out since March of last year. The instruments are played very well, and vocally they sound similar to the “Insurgent.” Also, they released this CDEP by themselves. Now I know, you may be saying, “So what, tons of bands release CDR’s all of the time.” But “In Black and White” went out of their way to get the CDs professionally pressed and mastered. They too packaged them very nicely in beige/brown sleeves.

“In Black and White” are currently on tour so do yourself a favor, and click the link below to see when and if they play your town. I’m willing to bet they are really great live.
